The organization’s services ran on an old server that had probably been compromised. They had to be moved to a new, trustworthy foundation – with minimal downtime, because the whole organization depended on them. Everything is built on open-source software.
Solution
- Design of a new infrastructure built on virtual machines and common standards of security, stability and flexibility.
- Migration of services from the old server to the new infrastructure.
- Operation without high availability: only one piece of hardware was available, so everything had to be set up to run stably with minimal intervention.
How the migration actually went – the old stack, what caused trouble during upgrades and how the new infrastructure is secured – is in the linked record.
Operation and handover
The infrastructure ran stably and served its purpose. Around 2018 it was handed over in working order and without major outages. Until the end of the collaboration, the complete open-source e-mail administration and work on Jekyll-based websites remained in the same hands.
Leading the technical team
After the infrastructure handover, the work shifted from machines to people and rules:
- recruiting volunteers for the technical team;
- collaborating on internal regulations and the budget;
- liaising with other departments;
- handling cyber incidents and enforcing security policies.
