Portmapper hangs at boot or shutdown

troubleshooting · linux published 06/2010
possibly outdated More than two years have passed since publication. The content may no longer hold.

Symptom

During boot or halt, the portmapper service hangs for about a minute before the system continues.

What was checked

  • Firewall rules – reviewed, working correctly.
  • Service restart under tcpdump – no unexpected traffic.
  • Logs – clean, nothing pointing at the cause.
  • A suspected link to a known portmap bug was ruled out.

Resolution

The service was not needed on the machine, so it was removed from the init scripts. The stall disappeared.
